QUESTION : By creating a dangling page are you cheating the other websites which you’ve agreed to exchange a link? Since the page may not be found?
ANSWER : A good question, but not at all. In order for the trading website to receive the benefit of a link, a search engine like Google needs to find the page. However, the page is invisibly linked to your main site by use of something known as a sitemap. A sitemap shows all the pages in you’re website, however is not visible to the user. That way search engines find the page and register the links. However it doesn’t remove from aesthetics of your original navigation design.
QUESTION : I’ve heard that adding more outbound links to your site will DECREASE your page rank. So it can be more harmful then good?
ANSWER : This is true to a certain degree. However, search engines like google rank individual PAGES not websites. Therefore this is irrelevant to your site, since the linking page doesn’t connect to your main site.
